Getting started
What is Gistmo?
Gistmo is where you gist with your people. Chats, voice notes, calls, Status and games, made in Nigeria and built to stay light on data.
How do I sign up?
Open Gistmo on the web and choose Sign up. Continue with Google, or use your email and we will send you a code. Then set your name and photo.
Is Gistmo free?
Gistmo is free to download and use.
Which phones and computers can I use?
On a computer, open web.gistmo.app in any modern browser. On iPhone, use Gistmo in Safari and add it to your Home Screen. On Android, the tester build is shared by invite for now, so use Gistmo on the web in the meantime.
How do I add friends?
Show your profile QR code and a friend can add you in one scan. You can also find people nearby on the map and send them a friend request.
iPhone and web
Do I need the App Store?
No. Gistmo runs in Safari, and you can add it to your Home Screen in a few taps.
How do I add Gistmo to my Home Screen?
- Open web.gistmo.app in Safari.
- Tap the Share button, the square with an arrow.
- Scroll and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Tap Add, then open Gistmo from your Home Screen and log in.
Why open Gistmo from the Home Screen icon?
Gistmo works best from the Home Screen icon. It opens on its own, like your other apps, without the Safari bars around it.
Can I use Gistmo on my laptop?
Yes. Open web.gistmo.app in any modern browser and log in.
I am testing Gistmo on iPhone. How do I send feedback?
Keep iOS up to date, and send anything you notice to privacy@gistmo.app. A screenshot helps a lot.
Android
How do I get Gistmo on Android?
Download the Android app from our Get Gistmo page, then open the file to install it.
The Android tester build is shared by invite for now. Use Gistmo on the web in the meantime.
My phone says the app is from an unknown source. Is that okay?
Android asks this for any app that does not come from a store. Only install Gistmo from gistmo.app, then allow the install when your phone asks.
Can I share an Android app with a friend?
Yes. You can send an Android app file (APK) in chat, so a friend can install the app you are using.
Chats and calls
How do I send a voice note?
Hold the mic, talk, and let go to send. Good for a quick hello or a long gist.
Can I send photos and stickers?
Yes. Share photos and stickers in any chat, and react to messages with emoji.
Why do some links open in another app?
Telegram and WhatsApp links open in their own apps, so nothing gets lost.
Can I delete a message I sent?
Yes. Delete it just for you, or for everyone in the chat. When you delete a message for everyone, its content is wiped from our servers.
Can messages disappear on their own?
Yes. Open the chat info and turn on Disappearing messages. New messages then disappear after 24 hours.
How do I make a call?
Open the chat and tap the voice or video call button. Calls are one to one for now.
Can I mute a busy chat?
Yes. Open the chat info and tap Mute notifications. You can also pin a chat to the top or archive it.
Status
What is the difference between Status and Snaps?
Status shares your day with your friends. A Snap is a quick photo or video you send to the friends you pick.
Who can see my Status?
You choose every time you post: all your friends, or only the friends you pick.
Can my friends repost my Status?
Only if you let them. Turn on Allow reposts when you post, and friends can repost it to their own Status. Leave it off and they can only watch.
What can I add to a Status?
Add stickers and emoji, or record a voice note for a quick hello or a longer gist.
Groups
How do I start a group?
Start a new group from your chats, give it a name and add your friends. The flatmates, the family, the squad: one place for every gist.
Can I run a poll?
Yes. Post a poll in the group and everyone can vote. Owambe or beach on Sunday? Now you know.
How do I keep a busy group easy to follow?
Reply to a message so everyone sees what you are answering, and react instead of sending one more message.
Games
Which games can I play?
Whot, Ludo, Ayo, Four in a row and more, right inside your chat.
How do I play with a friend?
Challenge them from your chat. They get an invite, you both play, and the banter continues in the same conversation.
Can I play on my own?
Yes. Chase your best score in the Arcade, or play against the computer.
How do I turn game sounds off?
Go to Settings, then Games, and turn off Game sounds. They also follow your phone's silent switch.
Gistmo AI
What is Gistmo AI?
A smart helper pinned to your chat list. Ask it anything, snap your homework, or send it a document you need explained in plain English.
Who makes Gistmo AI?
Gistmo AI is built into Gistmo.
Can it help with maths homework?
Yes. Send a photo of the question and see every step, not just the answer.
Can Gistmo AI make mistakes?
Yes, it can. Check important answers before you rely on them.
Nearby and Ghost mode
Can people see exactly where I am?
No. When you share, people only see a rough area about 500 m wide, never your exact spot.
Who can see me on the map?
Your friends, and people nearby if your profile is discoverable. People you block never see you. You can turn Map discoverability off in Settings.
What is Ghost mode?
Ghost mode hides you from the map in one tap, while you can still see others. New accounts start in Ghost mode, so nothing is shared until you choose.
What if I forget to turn sharing off?
You drop off the map after 7 days without sharing. Turn on Ghost any time to disappear at once.
